Inspiration for this project was mostly influenced by "The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening", probably the best adventure game, at the time, for the original Nintendo GameBoy.
A larger collection, including a top-down dungeon crawl tileset, was intended, but the "Retro Cave" subset was a good exercise.
Contents:
- Cave Blocks — Floor, middle, and ceiling tiles.
- Gem Block — One design in two sizes.
- Stalactites — Plain and speckled.
- Liquid Hazards — Dark water, turbulent water, lava.
- Platforms — Suspended, pulled L/R, floating (U-animate).
- Ladders — Metal rung-type, deteriorated plank-type, broken plank-type (side wall variations for both).
- Traps — Spikes, maces, and shockers (U-animate).
- Rope-style Bridge.
- Character — The character with shield is for reference (U-animate)
The jam rules specified the use of the four "green" colors of the original GameBoy, but other considerations were flexible, such as art size. I set a goal to create a clean tileset using 48 px tiles, available as a single download. The aim is to feel complete enough to create fun cave layouts while leaving room for game developers or artists to add any variations, as needed.
